“The Problem Lies with Professionals, Not the Profession” — Idowu Mercy

In a thought-provoking webinar, Mr. Idowu Mercy, the National Secretary of the Association of Clinical Coding and Documentation Improvement Specialists, Nigeria (ACCDISN), delivered a powerful message to Health Information Management professionals.

He emphasized that the challenges facing the clinical coding profession are not inherent to the field itself but stem from the actions and mindset of those practicing it.

“There are no problems in this profession; the problem lies with the people,” Mr. Mercy declared, highlighting the need for professionals to take ownership of their roles and embrace accountability.

Mr. Mercy also stressed the universal nature of the profession, stating, “The profession is the same from Nigeria to Canada.” Despite this global uniformity, he highlighted the pressing need to address existing challenges through actionable solutions.

The Role of ACCDISN in Driving Change

In his address, Mr. Mercy underscored the vital role of ACCDISN in fostering excellence and standardization within the profession.

He emphasized the organization’s commitment to training individuals to become better professionals, equipping them to meet global standards.

“We need to start taking steps to solve the challenges, and that is why we (ACCDISN) are hosting this webinar in 2025,” he remarked.

The vision of ACCDISN is centered on producing certified professionals and creating opportunities for the next generation of practitioners. By equipping individuals with the right skills and certifications, the organization aims to open new job opportunities and contribute to the growth of the profession.

One of the standout points from the webinar was ACCDISN’s dedication to grassroots development. Mr. Mercy stated, “We are open for collaboration. Our target is to go to the grassroots and build students so that we can change the narrative.

This focus on students and grassroots engagement demonstrates the organization’s forward-thinking approach, ensuring the profession remains dynamic and evolves to meet future demands

The webinar served as a clarion call, urging professionals to unite, collaborate, and take responsibility for the future of the field. Through initiatives like ACCDISN’s training webinars, the narrative can indeed change, creating a brighter future for professionals in Nigeria and beyond.

This insightful session by Mr. Idowu Mercy was a reminder of the importance of collective effort and the role of individuals in shaping the profession. The future of the field lies in the hands of those willing to step up and make a difference.
