Bridging the Gap Between Health Information Management and IT in Nigeria’s Healthcare System

The healthcare system is evolving rapidly due to technological advancements. Health Information Management (HIM) professionals play a critical role in managing electronic health records (EHRs), data analytics, interoperability, cybersecurity, and compliance. However, in Nigeria, instead of fostering collaboration, there is often a clash between HIM and Information Technology (IT) departments. This disconnect stems from overlapping responsibilities, limited awareness of HIM’s expertise in health data governance, and the struggle for control over health information systems. Bridging this gap is crucial to ensuring seamless data integrity, security, and efficient healthcare delivery in the digital age.

HIM professionals are data stewards who are trained and licensed to ensure that health information is properly managed, secured, and utilized for decision-making. The key duties are  to ensure proper data management, medical coding and classification, health information exchange, health data analytics and more. However, IT professionals are responsible for the technological infrastructure that supports healthcare operations. There key duties include designing and maintaining hospital information systems, networks and cloud storage. deploying firewalls, encryption and access control mechanism to safeguard health information and providing troubleshooting and user assistance for digital healthcare tools.

Rather than working in silos or engaging in power struggles, HIM and IT departments must collaborate to improve healthcare service delivery.

HIM professionals should define healthcare requirements, while IT experts handle system design and infrastructure. IT secures health data with encryption and firewalls, while HIM ensures compliance with health regulations and proper data usage. HIM professionals should educate IT teams on health data management, while IT experts train HIM professionals on emerging technologies. finally, both teams should participate in hospital technology planning to align IT investments with healthcare needs.

In conclusion, a strong HIM-IT collaboration is essential for a digitalized and efficient healthcare system in Nigeria. By fostering mutual respect, role clarity, and teamwork, healthcare institutions can enhance patient care, streamline operations, and protect sensitive health information. Now is the time to move beyond conflicts and embrace synergy for the future of health information management and technology in Nigeria.
